Learn to code your own WordPress theme
There’s a whole new lesson plan, new theme files, and a new format (video).
Build Your Own Damn Website focuses on the PHP side of building a WordPress theme. You should already be pretty comfy with HTML and CSS (if not, check out Master Customizer), but the course picks up from there.
Some of the things you’ll learn in the course:
- The structure of a WordPress theme and how the files work together.
- What PHP is and how to use it.
- Setting up the template files.
- Working with and displaying navigation menus.
- Setting up a blog post archive with pagination.
- Registering widget areas and displaying them on your site (we walk through a typical sidebar and a footer widget area).
- Creating a two column layout (with blog posts on the left and a sidebar on the right).
- Understanding the template hierarchy (including posts, pages, search results, archives, and more).
- Creating custom page templates (including a static, widgetized homepage).
- Required CSS styles that you NEED in your style.css file.
- Even how to use the Customizer and add your own custom settings! (Great if you want to sell pre-made themes.)
- Making the visual editor look like the front-end of your site.
- How to make your theme translation ready (a must-have for themes going in the repo or if you’ll be selling pre-mades).
