I still haven’t finished these 8 series – which ones are worth finishing?

I have a bad habit of reading the first book in a series when it first comes out, LOVING it, but then never keeping up with the series when the next books come out. It’s just so hard to remember how much you loved the first book when the second book finally comes out like twelve months later. The excitement definitely gets lost somewhere in all those months.

So here are eight series I never continued (mostly for the above reason). Let me know if you’ve read any of these and whether or not they’re worth finishing!

The Lunar Chronicles

I’ve read Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress and loved them all. For some reason I just never got around to reading Winter. Now I’m afraid it’s been so long that I won’t remember anything from the first three books and I might need to reread those first!

Partials Sequence

I’m iffy about finishing the Partials Sequence. I LOVED the first book and gave it five stars, but I didn’t love Fragments; I only gave it three stars. I think that’s the main reason I never continued onto the third book. Have you read it?

Insignia

Oh, Insignia. I think this is similar to The Lunar Chronicles in that it’s been so long since I’ve read books one and two that I’m afraid I’ll go into Catalyst (book three) not remembering anything. I’m kind of disappointed in myself for not finishing the series because I did love the story and genre of the first two. They’re totally “Ashley books”.

Legend

Legend was the first Marie Lu book I read and I loved it HARD. I just never got onto reading the second book, Prodigy. I guess it just fell through the cracks. Is the rest of the series as epic as the first book?

Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass is different from other series on this list because I made the decision to stop reading the series… but I’m wondering if I should give it another chance. I gave Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight both five stars—I ADORED them. But then I gave Heir of Fire a sad two stars. I thought it was boring, didn’t love the new points of view, and it was lacking the romance I fell so in love with.

So what do you think? Should I continue on and give Queen of Shadows a try?

Falling Kingdoms

Falling Kingdoms isn’t actually a completed series yet. The final book isn’t due to be published until February 2018. But I’m still way behind! I gave the first book five stars, but only gave the second one three stars which was a bummer. I think that’s why I never continued onto book three. But I think I want to give it another chance. Maybe I’ll start over with rereading book #1 and then just continue on. What do you think?

The Book of Ivy

I looooved The Book of Ivy so, so much. It really surprised me (in a good way). But then when the second book came out I just never read it. I’m not even sure why—it’s just sitting on my Kindle. I think I read that people were a tad disappointed with the second book and that put me off it. Have you read it?

Red Queen

I really enjoyed the first book in this series but never continued past that. I’ve forgotten everything from book one so if I do decide to read two and three I will definitely need to reread the first book!

  1. I’m still trying to get past the fact that you rated “Heir of Fire” TWO STARS because that is probably my favorite book (I love love love Manon and Abraxos!). It really does get better, because “Queen of Shadows” is epic. I haven’t picked up “Tower of Dawn” yet, though.

And I’ve only read the first two books in the “Red Queen” series. I admit, the second one is a bit better than the first. And I think there’s one last book coming out next year for that series!

    1. I know! I was so, so upset when I didn’t love Heir of Fire, especially because I loved Crown of Midnight so, so much. I think it was largely because everything I loved about Crown of Midnight was absent from Heir of Fire (romance). I think I would like to do a reread starting from book 1 though and finally try to finish the series.

And yes, I think you’re right about one last Red Queen book!

  2. Legend is one of my favorites (and there is a short story coming out!!! If you read the last book, you would be excited too). I like ToG as well, but if I had to pick one — Legend. The series is finished, it’s only three books, and it’s so good. I had to discontinue Red Queen. LOVED the first book, thought the second book as a chore to read, and just gave up after that one.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion Sam! Legend is one of those that I can’t believe I never finished, because I loved the first one so, so much.

    1. I hope so! I do think I remember most of the bigger picture, but I’ve probably lost a lot of the details.

  3. I loved the Lunar Chronicles so I hope you decided to finish that series. I also started the Red Queen and Legend and enjoyed them. But I would need to reread the first books since I don’t remember what happened. I also started Throne of Glass and loved it. I do want to finish the series but her books are so long!

    1. Yeah I think Lunar Chronicles is one I really do need to finish because I loved every single book in that series. There’s no reason not to finish!

  4. Lunar Chronicles is the only series here I’ve read, and I think it’s worth finishing, especially if you liked the first three. I almost never reread before continuing a series, but I think you’ll be fine here without rereading the first three. πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Kel! I definitely do think I’ll give it a shot. I’m probably guaranteed to love it since I loved all the others. πŸ™‚ I can’t believe I never got around to reading the last one!

  5. Honestly Winter was my least favorite book in the Lunar Chronicles series! It was just SO. LONG. I think it’s definitely worth reading one day to round out the series, but it wasn’t as great as the books that came before it.

    1. Oh bummer!! That sucks, but you’re right, I think it’s worth it just to finish the series and see the end. I’ve already come so far!

  6. The Throne of Glass series doesn’t get any better as the series go on. The author forgoes her character development/personalities, her world/magic system, and her plot for the sake of a romantic ship that she herself has said in interviews did not work. So I wouldn’t recommend continuing. The Lunar Chronicles is pretty great though, and I did like the Partials Sequence, but I wouldn’t recommend it to those who don’t like heavy science fiction. I’ve only read the first two books of the Red Queen series, but I remember really enjoying the first one. It took me a while to get into the second one (to even start reading it at that), but it was still pretty enjoyable.

    1. That’s a bummer about Throne of Glass. πŸ™ It definitely seems like people either continue to love it or start to hate it as the series goes on.

I am a big fan of science fiction so maybe I will continue Partials.

  7. I’m a late comer to Throne of Glass, as in I read them for the first time this summer (I know!) I can definitely see what you mean about the lack of romance in Heir of Fire but the romance in Empire of Storms is ??

For Red Queen DEFINITELY finish that series BUT maybe wait until closer to May when the last book is set to come out.

    1. Yeah I think I just need to power through the non-romance bits so I can get back into the romancey bits that are further on, haha.

Excellent idea RE: Red Queen! I think that’s also my plan with the Falling Kingdoms series. There’s one book left to come. These days I’m SO OVER waiting for the next book in a series to come out. I’d rather wait until the whole series is out then binge read them all at once.

      1. re: Red Queen / Waiting for series
I actually didn’t realized there was a 4th book coming out until I was half-way through book 3 and I was SO PISSED. I definitely wasn’t emotionally ready to finish that book and have to wait until May to finish the series lol.

  8. I haven’t finished any of these either. Some I have the books (like the Book of Ivy and Legend), but just haven’t gotten to them yet.

I was disappointed in Heir of Fire from the Throne of Glass series, too. But the next book–Queen of Shadows–I liked a little better. I have Empire of Storms but haven’t read it yet.

Whatever you decide to read, I’ll be interested in your reviews so I’ll know which series to finish!

    1. It seems like a lot of people adored Empire of Storms so maybe you need to continue as well. πŸ˜‰ I am considering doing a whole reread starting over from book one, then continuing on. Though rereading Heir of Fire might be painful for me lol. I think it might be necessary though because I’ve forgotten so much that happened.

  9. I had the same with Legend, though I did read the second book… I just never picked up the third book, even though I really enjoyed the previous two. Might reread those two soon and then pick up the third right after! Also, I do believe The Lunar Chronicles is worth finishing, I really enjoyed Winter and the novella bind-up and graphic novel that came after it!

    1. I think I would reread the first Legend book too if I ever decided to continue. It’s just been so long and I’ve forgotten pretty much everything!

    1. It’s good to hear someone mention Falling Kingdoms. πŸ™‚ I’m really interested in the idea of that series and you’re the first to mention it here so far.

  10. You should definitely finish the Lunar Chronicles, but I quit Heir of Fire halfway through and never picked up the series again so I’m not the best judge on that one. I’ve also heard lots of bad things about the Red Queen books so… But definitely read Winter!

    1. Yeah Heir of Fire was REALLY tough for me. I’ve heard it gets better though so part of me kind of wants to push myself to continue and find out if I like the following books more.

  11. Winter is so good, you really should pick it up! I don’t think you’d need a re-read (though you might like one!) as it does a pretty decent job of reminding you of past plot points without getting bogged down in ‘hey, remember when this happened??’

    1. I just got started on it! πŸ˜€ You’re right: it does a good job of recapping the rest of the series. I did end up reading the overviews of previous books on Recaptains though.
