The impossible was just the beginning. Now in their second year as superhuman government weapons-in-training at the Pentagonal Spire, Tom Raines and his friends are mid-level cadets in the elite combat corps known as the Intrasolar Forces. But as training intensifies and a moment arrives that could make or break his entire career, Tom’s loyalties are again put to the test.
Encouraged to betray his ideals and friendships for the sake of his country, Tom is convinced there must be another way. And the more aware he becomes of the corruption surrounding him, the more determined he becomes to fight it, even if he sabotages his own future in the process.
Drawn into a power struggle more dramatic than he has ever faced before, Tom stays a hyperintelligent step ahead of everyone, like the exceptional gamer he is—or so he believes. But when he learns that he and his friends have unwittingly made the most grievous error imaginable, Tom must find a way to outwit an enemy so nefarious that victory seems hopeless. Will his idealism and bravado cost him everything—and everyone—that matters to him?
Filled with action and intelligence, camaraderie and humor, the second book in S.J. Kincaid’s futuristic World War III Insignia trilogy continues to explore fascinating and timely questions about power, politics, technology, loyalty, and friendship.
Vortex by S.J. Kincaid
If there is one thing you need to know about me as a blogger, it’s that I loved the freaking pants off of Insignia (read my five star review ). Seriously. That book ROCKED MY WORLD!! There’s no way I can even express that other than shout it to the heavens.
I have super high hopes for the second book in this series, and I can only sit and pray that it’s as amazing as the first one!
Your raving reviews are bad for my bank account – and I shouldn’t buy anything for myself given it’s Christmas time! But I think I’ll have to get Insignia, despite all the other reqs. I’ve gotten from you thus far. Having not yet read Insignia, I won’t spoil myself by reading the synopsis for Vortex. But that cover is too cool. Great pick, as always. : )
Hahaha, sorry Jessie Marie! 😀 Insignia is such a great book though! But bummer, because I think you missed the $2.99 sale for it that was all throughout November. 🙁
This is the first I’ve heard of this series. Sounds interesting.

I just won a copy of Insignia recently! I have yet to read it but it sure does sound fabulous. Will have to read it before Vortex comes out. 🙂
My Wow Pick!
Ohhh I can’t wait to see what you think of Insignia! I really hope you like it! 🙂
I haven’t read Insignia. I ‘m not even sure I want to read it. It seems too scifi and futuristic.
Yeah it is definitely sci-fi-y and futuristic-y. If you’re not into that then you probably won’t like it. 🙁 Bummer, but I guess you can’t like everything! 😀
I haven’t heard of this series -don’t hit me, please-. But I’ll check out your review to see why do you love the first one so much. The premise of Vortex sounds cool, very Sci-fi and I love that genre. I’ll check them out and who knows? Maybe I’ll wait with you for the second one.
Thanks for sharing!
Check out my WoW if you want 🙂

If you love sci-fi then I think you’d really love Insignia! As I said to Jennifer, it’s like Harry Potter for sci-fi lovers! Take Harry Potter, subtract the magic, add crazy science and technology, subtract Quidditch, add gaming. That’s Insignia! 😀
I was going to get Insignia for the book signing we went to (that was one of the authors, right?) but it didn’t sound that interesting. Maybe I should reconsider.
Haha yeah. S.J. Kincaid was there. Insignia is like Harry Potter for science gamer nerds. It appeals to my geeky side.
I like that this cover shares a similar theme as the first book! I surely hope this one is going to live up to (if not exceed) your expectations 🙂
Your excitement has added Insignia to the top of my TBR list 🙂

I really need to read Insignia! I’m glad you liked the first book so much, maybe I can get a copy from the library soon 🙂 Nice cover for the second book too!
